There’s something undeniably powerful about Multnomah Falls. The sound of crashing water, the constant mist in the air, the towering basalt cliffs that seem to disappear into the sky. It’s one of Oregon’s most iconic places for a reason.
But beyond its natural beauty, this waterfall carries a story. A legend that speaks to love, sacrifice, and spirit. It’s a story that moved us so much, we built a product to reflect it; cooling, clarifying, and powerful in its own quiet way.
As the legend goes, told by the Multnomah people, a Chinookan tribe native to the Columbia River Gorge, Multnomah Falls was born from the grief and bravery of a young woman.
Long ago, a deadly illness spread through a local Native village. A wise elder spoke to the tribe and said the disease could only be stopped by the sacrifice of a maiden of noble birth. The chief’s daughter, hearing this and wanting to save her people, made her decision in silence.
She climbed to the top of the cliff and leapt, giving her life for her community.
Moved by her selflessness, the Great Spirit created the waterfall where she had fallen, so that her people would always remember her courage, and so the mist would cleanse and heal those who visited the site.
This story, told for generations by the tribes of the Columbia River Gorge, is one of deep emotion. It speaks to the bond between people and nature, and to the spiritual presence found in Oregon’s wild places.
Note: This legend is part of oral storytelling traditions, often attributed to the Multnomah people, and should be received as such, with respect and reverence.
Whether you believe in the legend or simply stand in awe of the place, Multnomah Falls makes you feel something.
It’s the kind of beauty that quiets your thoughts. The kind of place where you instinctively pause, breathe deeper, and maybe let go of something you didn’t know you were holding.
The story reminds us that nature can hold memory. That water, whether a river, a rainstorm, or a 600-foot fall, has a way of carrying emotion, cleansing pain, and making space for renewal.
When we created the Multnomah Falls scent, we wanted to honor that feeling: the cool mist, the clarity of rushing water, and the quiet strength in the air around the falls.
We chose a blend of peppermint and tea tree, not just because it smells incredibly fresh, but because of what it evokes.
Peppermint brings that cooling, energizing lift, like the wind off the waterfall hitting your skin.
Tea tree adds a cleansing, purifying edge that feels like a reset for your senses.
It’s available in soap, shampoo, and conditioner that help wash the day away, refresh the body, and clear the mind.
It’s the scent we reach for when we want to feel grounded, alert, and a little lighter.
You don’t need to stand at the base of a waterfall to experience its effect. You can recreate that moment of clarity at home; just you, your breath, and a little water.
Try this:
Turn down the noise.
Step into a warm shower or bath.
Use our Multnomah Falls soap or shampoo and take three slow, intentional breaths.
Let the scent rise and settle.
Step out feeling lighter.
Sometimes self-care is about release rather than indulgence.
Multnomah Falls is a feeling. A story. A spirit.
We created this scent to carry a piece of that with you. To remind you that beauty and courage can live side by side. That nature is both powerful and gentle. And that something as simple as a cool breath or a fresh lather can reconnect you to the wild, even for a moment.
